Forerunners Anthology Upgrade
For those of you who don’t know I have a background in design. For several years I made a living working in Photoshop, InDesign, After Effects, and Blender. Because of this, I’ve always made my own covers to save a few bucks. They’ve evolved over time, but because they were my creation I’ve always taken pride in them.
When I decided to update my Parasite Lost and Forerunners covers I wanted to elevate them to the next level and have some really slick 3D graphics. For Forerunners in particular, I wanted four cross sections of skulls that represented the four stories within. The result was what you see above.
While I’m happy with out it turned out, it was a TON of work creating the four different themed skulls and it felt like a tremendous waste to only see slivers of them. So I thought “Why not make full covers for each story and release them individually?”
Not only would I be able to show off the covers, but people who haven’t been exposed to the SoM universe would have an option to dip their toe in and try it without committing to a whole book. The idea was inspired by reading Conan The Cimmerian Barbarian: The Complete Weird Tales Omnibus. I love Conan, and each of those short stories was a bite-sized adventure in that world. The fact that those stories eventually turned into a massive property is amazing!
By splitting the stories up it also gives me the opportunity to run more promotions because Amazon only allows you to run certain promotions for a few days during any given period. I understand and support the reasons behind this, but wanted to have the option to run more promotions if I felt like it.
This is also sort of a precursor to new work, which will be releasing soon. By updating the covers with a specific design aesthetic it helps people recognize what they are signing themselves up for and gives me more opportunities to get my stories in front of people.
Anyway, enough of my jibber jabber. Here are the sexy new covers, which only took me approximately 100 hours to make. I’m not exaggerating.
